In the aftermath of my own family’s trauma at the Highland Park parade, I began studying medical research on firearms. The results were staggering, particularly for a surgeon who does not regularly treat firearm injuries. Gun safety legislation, both statewide as well as federally, consistently has been proven to save lives. As a physician and scientist, I learned that we, as a medical community, are most apt to interpret and present this data to lawmakers. My role evolved to coordinate meetings with Congressional offices and mediate conversations between constituents and their federal representation. As our network has grown, it has been rewarding to connect with healthcare professionals from across the country who are striving to make our communities safer.
